Primarily, I am a website designer by profession, but I also dabble in many other areas, such as graphic design, animation, and to a small extent, digital video editing and photography.
How I design my sites
There have been a number of methods that I have used for this process. The first, and probably the way most web designers have started, is to use a basic program such as Frontpage or its equivelant. No fuss easy to use. This, coupled with my introdution to HTML at uni, formed the basis of my knowledge, and how to use it.
I soon came to realise how much useless code these programs produced, and learnt how to hard code pages using a program like notepad, or my preferred program, Crimson Editor. I now use pure hard coding which produces professional results. My designs now follow a regular pattern.....
Firstly I open my standard 1024x768 template in Photoshop, and create the
entire design and layout in Photoshop. I always design for 1024x768, as
it looks good at this resolution, and most computers run this anyway. If
not, the site resizes to the appropriate res, which is a big advantage
and looks good.
Next I slice up the image into tables or frames, and import ready for final
adjustment in Dreamweaver. Once the overall layout gives what I'm after I can
then apply style sheets (CSS) to the main content page, which sets fonts and
Hyperlink colours, table colours, scroll bars etc.
Finally after getting the page to look just right, I open the page in Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, perform checks at resolutions of '800x600', '1024x768' and '1280x960', and then perform several fixes that usually occur with browser compatibility between IE and Firefox, Opera or Safari. It is now when I have to re-arrange everything so that it comforms to both browsers standards.
